While ancient linguistics such as Hebrew decipher the word ‘northward’ (tsaphon) a “hidden” or “dark place,” it couldn’t be further from the truth for us northerners who choose to live here for a supreme way of life. As many of you probably know, northword magazine is picking up where Connections left off last summer. In selecting a fresh new look and name for the magazine, we sought to highlight the physical region and our pride in the North, as well as to signal movement and a shift, northward.
The resulting title, northword, seems a fitting play on words, to represent the written word travelling across the North.
Although far, both in distance and time, from today’s northwestern B.C., the empire of Media (c. 612 BC to c. 550 BC)—commonly referred to as the kingdom of the North—was one of five great empires of ancient times that prefigure much of modern history and events, in addition to
other dynasties such as Egyptian, Indian and Chinese. We’d like to think of our North as our kingdom, and the media you’re holding in your hands as a tool to anticipate, learn about, and comment on current history, culture and events.
With a fresh new look, banner and management team, we still intend to continue with many aspects of Connections for which it was so well loved, such as creating strong regional links in the North, while incorporating new features and components you see in this issue, in hopes of appealing to an even broader readership.
As the only regional, independent magazine in the top half of the province, we promise expanded content, in-depth articles and stories on northwestern B.C.’s diversity, culture, arts, lifestyles and opportunities.
As with Connections, this publication will be free of charge and distributed on a quarterly basis across the northwest, from Prince George to Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands, with a highly targeted circulation reaching in excess of 30,000 readers across the northwest.
Our readership consists of local residents and visitors alike, who want to be informed about what’s happening in different communities across the North, enjoy varied forms of arts, culture, and recreation, and who appreciate intelligent, in-depth articles on issues affecting the area.
At northword magazine, we welcome you to visit our office, give us a call or send e-mail—with story tips, events listings or advertising inquiries. Although we somewhat slipped into this venture with the speed of northern lights, we’ll try not to lose our footings on the first banana peel in sight. We look forward to serving your needs! Stay tuned for our winter issue, Nov. 25, 2004.
