Adrenaline load goes on the road

More outdoor films coming to the northwest, as part of Banff Mountain Film Festival

By: Laurie Kallio

More high-adrenaline outdoor films are coming to Smithers, thanks in part to Sieghard Weitzel.

Weitzel, owner of Outdoor Essentials in Smithers, says the Banff Mountain Film Festival is an event that is very much appreciated by the community—judged by its attendance. So when the opportunity arose to host a second night of entertainment with more action films he didn’t want to pass it up.

Dubbed “faster, steeper, higher, deeper,” the Radical Reels Film Tour complements the established Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour.

Radical Reels is not new to those in Banff but is hitting the road for the first time elsewhere this year.

“ The Reels” was created due to the number of action films being submitted to the film festival. They did not fit into the regular screenings, thus creating the need for the Radical Reels evening presentations. According to the Banff Mountain Film Festival, the Radical Reels production focuses on dynamic films featuring sports such as skiing, climbing, kayaking, base jumping, snowboarding and mountain biking. While these activities continue to be included on the World Tour, Radical Reels is for those who just have to see all action films.

Weitzel believes Radical Reels may attract a younger crowd. The Banff Mountain Film Festival and Radical Reels in Smithers are fundraisers for Bulkley Valley Search and Rescue, as well as another local charity yet to be determined.
